When you ask to subscribe, this site stores your email address, and your first name if you give one, and emails you a link to confirm. Nothing is sent to you beyond that email unless you confirm.
When you confirm, it also stores:
With each of those consent records it also keeps a one-way hash of your address (a fingerprint that can be matched against an address but not turned back into one), so it can show when and how you agreed.
Why:to send you a link to confirm that the address is yours, and then the updates you chose. Your first name is optional; it isn't used to identify you, and it isn't put in the confirmation email.
No newsletters are being sent yet. When they are, every one will include a link to unsubscribe.
Changing your topics or unsubscribing: on the Manage subscriptionpage, enter your address and we'll email you a link (it works for 7 days). From there you can change your topics, choose none, or unsubscribe from everything. No account or password is needed. Each change is recorded the same way as your original consent: when, what changed, and the one-way hash of your address.
If you unsubscribe,we keep your address, your choices and the record of your consent and withdrawal, so we can make sure you aren't emailed again and can show when you withdrew. You won't be subscribed again unless you ask: subscribing again means confirming from an emailed link and choosing your topics once more.
If email to your address bounces permanently, or is reported as spam, we stop emailing it and record why. Only you can change that, by contacting us.
If you don't confirm within 7 days of your latest request, your address and first name are deleted automatically (normally within a few days after that). The record of the request stays, holding the hash but not the address or name.
If you confirm, your address, first name and choices are kept while you're subscribed, and afterwards as described above. To have them removed entirely, contact us.
Abuse prevention: to limit repeated requests, the site counts them per email address and per network (IP) address, storing only one-way hashes of those addresses. The counts expire within a day and are then deleted automatically.
Where:everything is stored in this site's own Amazon Web Services account, in the United States (Oregon), and our emails are sent with Amazon Simple Email Service, which tells us only when an email bounces or is reported as spam. No mailing-list or advertising service receives your address. The emails contain no tracking pixels or tracked links.
For questions about your data, or to have it removed, email mjonconrad@gmail.com.
Only if you accept. The site asks before measuring anything. Until you press Accept, nothing from Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager is loaded and nothing is sent to them. If you decline, nothing is loaded at all.
If you accept, Google Tag Manager loads Google Analytics, which sets its cookies (named _ga) to recognise your browser between visits. It records which pages you view and, for articles, works and chapters, which ones; where you came from (such as a search engine); your device, browser and approximate location as Google derives them; and, if you subscribe, that you started, asked for a confirmation link and confirmed, with the topics you chose. It never receives your email address, name, the links we email you, or anything else you type. Google Analytics is set not to use the data for advertising.
Why: to learn whether readers are finding the site and which writing they read, so we know what to write and where to share it.
Where and how long:Google processes the data, in the United States and elsewhere, under its own terms; we see it in aggregate reports. It's kept for 14 months.
Changing your mind: use Cookie settingsat the bottom of any page. Declining after accepting stops measurement and deletes the site's Google Analytics cookies. Your choice is kept in your own browser's storage.
